- On the 15th January 1966, 22 people were killed when 5 soldiers organised a coup d'etat against the Nigerian government at that time.
- The casualties included the Nigerian prime minister, and following the coup Nigeria went under a military government, which was a large reason Nigeria did not take on a truly democratic government until 1999.
- However, this coup was technically not successful, as it was followed by multiple counter-coups and the Nigerian civil war the following year.
