- Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a condition characterised by micrognathia (mandibular hypoplasia), glossoptosis (downward displacement of the tongue) and upper airway obstruction.
- It is also commonly associated with the presence of cleft palate, although this is not a necessary feature for diagnosis.
- A sequence is where one malformation leads to a chain of events that cause other abnormalities, whereas a syndrome is a collection of symptoms which are not caused by one another by arise due to a shared pathogenesis.
- This is why PRS was originally known as Pierre Robin Syndrome, but was changed recently.
- PRS is associated with a multitude of other syndromes (e.g. stickler syndrome, velocardiofacial syndrome etc.) but the aetiology and pathophysiology of the condition is largely unknown.
